7 June 2024
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We planted a beautiful Christmas bush to mark 2024 World Environment day this year and I spoke with the children about three small ways that they, as little people, can care for the environment.
Firstly… put your rubbish (especially those little bits of plastic that end up in the ocean!) in the bin.
Secondly…turn off the lights when you’re not in a room.
Finally, and most importantly, notice, enjoy and say a daily prayer of thanks for the gift of God’s beautiful creation.
Congratulations to our dancers who took to the stage at the Coffs Harbour Dance Eisteddfod today, placing third from a group of 14. We can’t wipe the smile off Mrs Sevenoaks’ face! Here’s the sneak preview they gave us at Assembly this morning.
Wishing you all a restful, peaceful long weekend.
Warm regards,
Liz

LOVING LEARNING
Year 6 AR
This term, our Year 6 students have embarked on a deeper journey into the world of digital technology, honing new skills that blend creativity with innovation. Utilising their iPads, they have been exploring the fascinating realm of Augmented Reality (AR) to learn how to bring their ideas to life. The students have shown remarkable enthusiasm and skill as they learn to create immersive AR scenes, adding a dynamic and interactive dimension to their learning. The students will be applying these new skills to their History projects in the coming weeks.
FROM THE MISSION DESK
What’s been happening in Religious Education in Year 4?
Year 4 has been diving into an inspiring topic in Religious Education: the Holy Spirit's gift of courage. Our students have been exploring what it means to possess true courage and how this gift can help us face challenges with strength and faith and continue the mission of Jesus.
To make this learning more tangible, each student thought of a person they believe embodies the Holy Spirit's gift of courage. They wrote heartfelt reflections on these individuals, highlighting the ways we can draw lessons from their courageous actions. From historical figures, saints and disciples to everyday heroes, the children discovered that courage is all around us and that we too can embrace this powerful gift in our own lives.
Mini Vinnies - Socks & Jocks
Mini Vinnies launched their MHOC Socks and Jocks appeal at last Friday’s assembly. Gai Newman, Team Leader at Pete’s Place mentioned that their socks and jocks donations are at their lowest ever…oh no! All donations of new socks and jocks will be gratefully accepted.

SPORT NEWS
NSWCPS Cross Country
This week our Cross Country superstars, Lacey Van Hoeck & Laila Summers travelled to Sydney to compete in the NSWCPS Cross Country carnival. In order to progress through to this event the girls achieved (a minimum of) the following:
- Finish top 5 at the MHOC school carnival
- Finish top 8 at the Clarence Zone carnival
- Finish top 8 at the Diocesan carnival
At the event the girls finished with amazing times and incredible average speeds per kilometre. Laila finished 18th in her event and 3rd for the Lismore Diocese in her age group. Lacey finished 6th and 1st for the Lismore Diocese in her age group! This means she will progress to the NSW PSSA carnival again this year!
We are so proud of our girls representing our little MHOC on such a big stage and mixing it with athletes from all over the state. Congratulations girls on such amazing achievements!
Rugby Union Trials
This week Mr Murphy & Mr Warnes have been hosting trials for our Yr 5-6 Rugby Union team to compete at the Diocesan Rugby Union Gala Day next week. We are so lucky to have teachers willing to put their hands up to assist with things such as this and we are especially lucky to have Mr Murphy who is an accredited tackle safe coach! We are confident that all who trialed for this team have come out as better players, safer tacklers and we have definitely seen home hidden talents unlocked!
Students successful in making this team will be notified via Compass and will receive all pertinent information regarding this event.

LIBRARY WHISPERS
We were very fortunate to have the wonderful author Lee Constable in to speak with Years 4-6 on Wednesday. Lee has a background in science as well as performance art, which made her the perfect person to discuss heavy topics such as climate change and renewable energy in a fun interactive way.
The session went for an hour and a half with lots of activities and time for questions. The students were amazing; they were enthusiastic and engaged and so well behaved. I was incredibly proud of them all.
Scholastic Book Club catalogues went home this week. If you didn’t receive yours, you can log into the Scholastic website and view it online. https://www.scholastic.com.au/book-club/book-club-parents/ Don’t forget you can either order online through their website or bring correct money and order form into the office. Orders close on Monday 17th June.
I came across this little group as I was putting books away at lunch - I’m not sure why the floor in between all the book spinners was such a popular place to colour in, but I thought they looked very cute
OSHC
This week at MHOC OSHC, the children had an absolute blast with a variety of engaging activities! The arts and crafts corner was bustling with creativity as the kids dove into various projects, letting their imaginations run wild. The cars and roads setup was a hit, allowing the children to explore cause and effect through dynamic play. Our bead areas keep lots of the MHOC OSHC crew busy making colorful creations and demonstrating incredible artistic expression. And let's not forget the slime – it was super popular, providing endless sensory fun and excitement. The joy and laughter in the air were contagious, making it a memorable week for everyone involved! This week the MHOC OSHC crew demonstrated a growth mindset and learning dispositions such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, enthusiasm, persistence and imagination as they meet Learning Outcome 4.1.
